Best USB & Podcast Microphones: A Buying Guide

Podcasting, streaming and voice-over all start with the microphone. The good news: you don't need a full studio to sound professional. Here's how to choose, and a few mics we recommend.

USB, XLR — or both?

USB mics plug straight into your computer — no extra gear, perfect for getting started. XLR mics need an audio interface or mixer, but give you more flexibility as you grow. Some mics offer both outputs, so you can start with USB and move to XLR later.

Dynamic vs. condenser

Dynamic mics pick up less room sound, which makes them forgiving in untreated rooms (bedrooms, offices). Condenser mics capture more detail but also more of the room — great in a quiet, treated space.

Our picks

  • Samson Q2U — a dynamic mic with both USB and XLR outputs plus a headphone jack. An easy first mic that stays useful when you upgrade.
  • Samson Go Mic — a compact USB mic that clips onto a laptop. Ideal for travel and video calls.
  • Samson Meteor Mic — a desktop USB condenser mic with fold-back legs.
  • Apogee MiC+ — a premium USB condenser mic that works with Mac, PC, iPhone and iPad.
  • IK Multimedia iRig Mic Cast HD — a pocket-sized mic for recording on phones and computers.

Recording with guests?

If you record two or more people, an all-in-one podcast station such as the TASCAM Mixcast 4 gives each guest their own mic input and headphone output in one box.
