How to Choose Your First Audio Interface

An audio interface is the bridge between your microphones and instruments and your computer. It's the single biggest upgrade for anyone recording at home. Here's what to look for.

1. Count your inputs

Solo singer-songwriter or podcaster? Two inputs (one mic plus one instrument, or two mics) covers most needs. Recording a band or drums? Look for 8 or more inputs.

2. Outputs and monitoring

You'll want at least one pair of outputs for studio monitors and a headphone output. Extra outputs are handy for a second headphone mix or outboard gear.

3. Connection

Most modern interfaces use USB-C and are powered by your computer. Check compatibility with your operating system and recording software before you buy.

4. Preamp quality

Better mic preamps mean cleaner, lower-noise recordings — especially with quieter dynamic and ribbon mics.
